About the Artwork
Print & Object is excited to announce the release of a new series of works on paper by Chicago-based artist Sarah Leuchtner. This new body of work was created while Leuchtner was an artist in residence at the Kimball Arts Center, Chicago where she was focusing her energy on new artwork formats and explorations.
Leuchtner’s visual language includes an alphabet of imagined or found shapes, varying interpretations of the grid, and a combination of what has been and what is to come. She draws inspiration from city life and her surroundings, as well as iconography, contemporary culture, vintage signage, guilty pleasure media and television.
The residency placed Leuchtner outside her normal daily surroundings into a new studio space. Pushing and pulling her visual references in new directions, this time outside of the normal artistic routine created space for challenging new scales of working and formal endeavors. Rolling organic forms slip up against hardline graphic references and textures as text-based iconography layers atop visual planes vibrating with déjà vu like familiarity. A visual puzzle of lived experience, cultural history, and imagined states of visual play - Leuchtner’s works on paper unfold with time and commitment.
